I assisted researchers from Stony Brook University in a project that put trackers on Herring Gulls living on the islands surrounding JFK airport

Unable to pull our boat up onto the beach, we waded ashore (part of the island can be seen in the background). You can tell by my coat and scarf it wasn’t exactly swimming weather!

How do you catch a gull? One way is to position a box over the nest and wait for the bird to sit on its eggs. Pulling the string topples the box, safely trapping the gull inside
